Fluorescent Dyes for Analytical Applications Nile Red as a Microplastic Marker Gute Chemie. Fluorescent dyes represent a novel possibility to achieve a quantification of microplastic particles. The plastic particles can be distinguished very precisely from inorganic (e.g. sediments) and organic (e.g. plant components) materials. With the aid of the fluorescent emission of the dyes, the particles can be identified and counted down to the lower micrometer range. Another advantage is the solvatochromic property of the fluorescent dyes. Due to the different polarity properties of the plastic surfaces, it is possible to obtain a categorization in addition to a quantification. Thus, not only a particle concentration is obtained but also an accurate composition of the microplastic sample.
